Dealing with Spider Mites
Dealing with Spider Mites.
Spider Mites are effective at wiping out an entire colony of plants, if not taken care of properly, here are some vital pieces of information on the Spider Mite. They are impossible to avoid. But there are ways to deal with them effectively.
First we should look at how they are spread.
Spider Mites can be on anything, outdoor plants, indoor plants, floating in the air, store bought soil, outdoor soil, your own personal blend soil, cats, lizards, dogs, clothes, or just show up.
Spider Mites
- Spider Mites love low humidity and warm temperatures, which is why you have higher risk of a mite claiming your plant as home in the winter time, or in colder climates.
- Spider Mite eggs can go dormant for up to 5 years and do not need a male or female to reproduce.
- Spider Mites are very resilient to treatments, and have the ability to evolve quickly, becoming immune to many pesticides and chemicals.
- A female Spider Mite will lay up to 12 eggs per day.
Effective Removal Methods(must use a combination of these)
- The Predatory Mite, Phytoseiulus persimilis, is a welcome insect in the garden. The species is a specialized predator, it feeds on all stages of its prey, from egg to adult. P. persimili can be bought from many biological control companies. You need on average 20 per plant. P. persimili mites prefer to search for their food, so try to release them as far to the bottom of the plant as possible.
- A blast of high humidity once a day, about 90% for an hour or two, as long as your plants are not in their last two weeks of flowering.
- Misting your plant a couple of times per week.
- Air movement.
- A No Pest Strip.
- If your garden is indoors in a tight space you can do an overflow of CO2 for about 15-30 mins once a day, make sure to vent outside afterwards.
- A small vacuum to suck the Mites and their eggs. The size of a screw driver. DO NOT use a regular house vacuum.
- Last but not least is avoiding cross contamination with things that have been sitting outside, or somewhere plants are stored.
So don't be afraid of Spider Mites, they are a part of your garden, just think of them as one more obstacle in obtaining helpful and potent Medical Marijuana. Don't forget that Spider Mites will infest every indoor garden, it's only a matter of time.
